Key Responsibilities of the Laboratory Quality Control Officer Role

As the Laboratory Quality Control Officer, you will play an essential role in supporting the hospital’s laboratory operations and ensuring adherence to quality and regulatory requirements. Your primary responsibilities will include:

Development and Implementation of Quality Assurance Programs:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory quality assurance (QA) programs in alignment with ISO 15189:2012 standards.
  • Establish and uphold comprehensive quality control (QC) procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results.

Compliance Monitoring and Regulatory Adherence:

  • Monitor daily laboratory activities to ensure compliance with established quality standards and national/international regulations.
  • Ensure full compliance with Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) and other relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Prepare and coordinate laboratory accreditation and certification processes.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.

Internal Audits and Continuous Improvement:

  • Conduct regular internal audits to assess laboratory compliance with quality standards.
  • Identify non-conformities and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Analyze laboratory performance data, generate reports, and communicate findings to hospital management.
  • Conduct risk assessments and recommend actionable improvements to minimize quality-related risks.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Management:

  • Develop, review, and update laboratory SOPs to align with best practices, regulatory standards, and continuous improvement objectives.
  • Ensure strict adherence to SOPs by laboratory staff and conduct training sessions when updates occur.

Training and Staff Competency Development:

  • Develop and deliver quality assurance training programs for laboratory personnel.
  • Evaluate staff competency in performing laboratory tests and maintaining quality standards.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, quality awareness, and patient safety within the laboratory.

Incident Management and Proficiency Testing:

  • Investigate laboratory errors, incidents, and deviations; ensure proper documentation and resolution.
  • Implement and monitor proficiency testing programs to validate laboratory accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ensure proper calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor reagent and supply quality to prevent contamination or expired materials from affecting test outcomes.

Support ISO Accreditation:

  • Play a pivotal role in supporting the laboratory’s journey towards attaining ISO 15189:2012 accreditation.

Qualifications and Skills Required

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications and competencies:

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science and Technology or its equivalent.
  • Certification in Quality Assurance, Laboratory Management, or a related field is preferred.

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, with a focus on quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
  • Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) and hold a valid practicing license.
  • Prior experience working in an ISO 15189:2012 accredited laboratory is essential.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in implementing quality management systems and laboratory accreditation processes.

Technical Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory regulations, accreditation standards, and quality assurance best practices.
  • Proven analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems and healthcare management information systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Additional Skills:

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team collaboration abilities.
  • Training in ISO 15189:2012 standards is mandatory.
  • Certificate in computer applications.
