Key Responsibilities of the Community Oral Health Officer Role

As the Community Oral Health Officer, you will be entrusted with providing comprehensive dental services and promoting oral health awareness within the community. Your core responsibilities include:

Dental Services Delivery:

  • Perform authorized dental procedures such as teeth cleaning, plaque removal, cavity fillings, tooth extractions, tooth rebuilding, and replacement of missing teeth in a sterile and patient-friendly environment.
  • Analyze x-rays and evaluate dental needs, including reviewing patient medical histories and conducting dental charting.
  • Treat and help prevent gum diseases and other dental conditions.

Patient Education and Counseling:

  • Conduct dental health education sessions for patients, emphasizing preventive oral care and hygiene practices.
  • Provide counseling and reassurance to patients requiring additional support and information.
  • Offer instructions on post-treatment dental care and prescribe medications when necessary.

Infection Prevention and Safety Protocols:

  • Implement and adhere to strict infection prevention protocols, ensuring sterilization of instruments, cleanliness of dental procedure areas, and proper storage of dental tools.

Inventory Management and Equipment Maintenance:

  • Manage the dental unit’s inventory of equipment and supplies, ensuring timely preparation of orders to avoid stockouts.
  • Ensure the dental facility operates with well-maintained, fully functional equipment.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

  • Maintain up-to-date dental files for all patients, ensuring confidentiality and accuracy.
  • Generate weekly and monthly reports detailing dental unit performance and service statistics.

Qualifications and Skills Required

The ideal candidate should demonstrate the following qualifications and competencies:

Educational Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Community Oral Health from a recognized institution.

Professional Certifications:

  • Registered with the Oral Health Association of Kenya.
  • Valid practicing license from the relevant regulatory authority.

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ working experience as a Community Oral Health Officer in a clinical or community health setting.

Technical Competencies:

  • Proficiency in dental procedures, patient care, and preventive oral healthcare.
  • Strong knowledge of infection prevention protocols and dental equipment maintenance.
  • Excellent record-keeping and inventory management skills.

Additional Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to educate and counsel patients effectively.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including healthcare management systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
