ABOUT CEMA – UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI

AVAILABLE TRACKS FOR INTERNSHIP
You must choose one specialization area. Each track will involve unique, high-impact work under the supervision of CEMA’s research fellows.
TRACK 1: DATA SCIENCE INTERNSHIP KENYA 2025
Responsibilities:
-
Use R programming and other statistical tools for health data analysis.
-
Assist in acquiring, cleaning, and wrangling large health and demographic datasets.
-
Apply machine learning algorithms and advanced statistical models to derive insights.
-
Design and update data dashboards and visualizations to translate findings into usable policy tools.
-
Collaborate with health economists, epidemiologists, and engineers on cross-disciplinary projects.
-
Learn to integrate spatial data (GIS) with epidemiological and economic datasets for decision-making.
Eligibility Highlights:

Degree in Data Science, Statistics, GIS, Mathematics, or related field.

Demonstrated ability to use data analysis tools and programming languages (especially R).

Strong interest in data-driven health system improvements.
TRACK 2: HEALTH ECONOMICS INTERNSHIP
Responsibilities:

Organize and analyze clinical, safety, and cost-effectiveness data for health technologies.

Conduct literature reviews, assist in health technology assessments (HTAs), and generate economic evidence.
-
Support budget impact analysis and maintain cost-benefit databases.
-
Draft policy briefs, HTA reports, and documentation for use by public health stakeholders.
-
Adapt international HTA frameworks for use within the Kenyan healthcare context.
Eligibility Highlights:

Degree in Economics, Health Economics, Health Systems, or a closely aligned discipline.

Understanding of cost modeling, public health policy, or budget impact tools.

Passion for evaluating health technologies for national scale implementation.
TRACK 3: EPIDEMIOLOGY INTERNSHIP KENYA 2025
Responsibilities:
-
Collect and analyze epidemiological data for disease surveillance and modelling.
-
Assist in developing burden of disease models and supporting systematic reviews.
-
Build visualizations (tables, charts, maps) to translate findings into digestible formats.
-
Contribute to technical reports, policy briefs, and scientific publications.
-
Maintain documentation of analysis workflows and participate in HTA projects.
Eligibility Highlights:

Degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, or Population Health.
-
Familiarity with evidence synthesis, disease modeling, and/or systematic review tools.
-
Eager to work on real-world disease burden evaluations and impact modeling.
TRACK 4: SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP KENYA 2025
Responsibilities:
-
Build and maintain web platforms and internal systems for visualizing public health data.
-
Support server configuration, security, and data integrity protocols.
-
Migrate CEMA’s digital content to a secure internal platform with minimal downtime.
-
Optimize data processing algorithms for scalability and performance.
-
Provide technical support for CEMA systems, document workflows, and develop SOPs.
Eligibility Highlights:

Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Software Engineering.

Proficiency in web development, data system security, and technical troubleshooting.
-
Interest in applying software to epidemiology and public health system needs.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ALL TRACKS
To apply, you must meet the following baseline qualifications:
-
Hold a Bachelor’s Degree (earned after 2021) in a relevant field:
Data Science, Statistics, Epidemiology, Economics, Computer Science, Mathematics, GIS, Biostatistics, Health Systems, Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, or Actuarial Science. -
Demonstrated interest in your chosen track, with either academic or project-based experience.

Basic data analytics skills and at least one programming or analysis language (R, Python, STATA, etc.).

Commitment to completing the full six-month program beginning June 3, 2025.

Availability to work from CEMA’s physical office at the University of Nairobi.

TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT

The internship is full-time, Monday to Friday, based at University of Nairobi – CEMA Office.

All interns will undergo a two-stage selection process, including a practical task assessing the competencies needed in their chosen track.
