As the Production Manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring efficient farm operations, high-quality vegetable production, and seamless collaboration between the field and Packhouse teams. This is a full-time, on-site role based at Hippo Farm in Kabati, Thika.

Key Responsibilities:

As the Production Manager, you will oversee the end-to-end vegetable crop production process, ensuring the highest quality, efficiency, and compliance with international standards. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Crop Production & Land Preparation

  • Oversee land preparation, planting, and crop establishment to ensure optimal yields.
  • Implement best practices in soil health management and crop rotation.
  • Manage the crop husbandry process, including weeding, irrigation, spraying, and fertilization.

2. Irrigation & Nutrient Management

  • Develop and execute irrigation schedules based on crop requirements and seasonal variations.
  • Monitor water usage efficiency to minimize wastage and optimize plant health.
  • Oversee fertilizer application, composting, manure integration, and foliar feeding.

3. Pest & Disease Control

  • Lead the agronomy team in implementing effective pest and disease management programs.
  • Ensure all crops remain below pest and disease threshold levels.
  • Conduct routine field inspections to detect early signs of infestation and take proactive measures.

4. Packhouse Coordination & Quality Assurance

  • Act as a key liaison between the farm and Packhouse team to ensure timely product supply.
  • Guarantee that harvesting, handling, and storage meet export quality standards.
  • Conduct regular Packhouse visits to address any quality issues and ensure seamless integration.

5. Compliance & Audits

  • Ensure full compliance with customer standards, audit requirements, and food safety protocols.
  • Oversee and prepare the farm for external audits and customer visits.
  • Address and resolve any customer complaints by conducting thorough investigations and root cause analysis.

6. Team Leadership & Workforce Management

  • Supervise and provide guidance to Field Section Heads and farm workers.
  • Conduct staff performance evaluations and implement training programs.
  • Maintain a positive work culture while ensuring discipline and compliance with company policies.
  • Plan daily, weekly, and monthly farm operations in collaboration with the Farm Manager.

7. Health & Safety Management

  • Enforce workplace safety and ensure adherence to occupational health policies.
  • Conduct safety training programs and hazard assessments for farm workers.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

To excel in this role, you should meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience in vegetable or horticultural farm management.
  • Strong technical knowledge in crop production, irrigation, pest control, and nutrition management.
  • Proven leadership experience in managing farm teams and operations.
  • Ability to develop and execute strategic farm plans while ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with Packhouse, auditors, and farm staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, analytical mindset, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced agricultural environment while ensuring high-quality standards.
