INTRODUCTION

The Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) is a State Corporation established under the Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) Act No. 28 of 2013, operating under the Ministry of Education. The Agency is tasked with developing, managing, and strengthening the National Innovation System to drive socio-economic development through science, technology, and innovation.

VACANCY 1: Principal Legal Officer – KeNIA Grade 4

Role Summary: The Principal Legal Officer will provide legal and regulatory support, ensure compliance with relevant statutes, and guide the agency’s decision-making processes. This position will also offer corporate governance and legal advisory services to management, oversee contracts, handle legal documentation, and safeguard KeNIA’s legal interests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer legal opinions and interpretations on statutes, regulations, policies, and contracts
  • Draft and vet contracts, MoUs, service-level agreements, leases, and other legal instruments
  • Represent KeNIA in legal proceedings, tribunals, and arbitration forums
  • Maintain an up-to-date repository of legal and policy documents
  • Interpret and guide compliance with the ST&I Act and related public sector laws
  • Liaise with external counsel and oversee litigation matters
  • Provide guidance on matters of corporate governance, ethics, and board operations
  • Develop and review legal policies and internal control frameworks
  • Conduct staff sensitization on legal and regulatory compliance

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law
  • Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, in good standing
  • Member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK)

Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum of 8 years legal experience, 3 of which must be at senior level in the public or private sector
  • Sound knowledge of constitutional, labor, procurement, and public service laws
  • Demonstrated ability to manage institutional legal functions and litigation processes
  • Proficiency in legal research tools, MS Office, and case management systems

Desirable Attributes:

  • High levels of integrity, confidentiality, and analytical skills
  • Excellent negotiation, advisory, and written communication skills
  • Experience supporting a board or governance function is an added advantage

Role Summary: The Senior Driver will be responsible for safe transportation of staff and documents, vehicle maintenance, and supporting logistical tasks within KeNIA’s operations. The position requires discipline, professionalism, and a high degree of reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive agency vehicles as assigned for official duties
  • Maintain the cleanliness, fuel, and service schedules of assigned vehicles
  • Detect and report any mechanical issues or need for repairs
  • Log daily mileage, fuel consumption, and servicing history
  • Ensure vehicles are secured and used only for authorized activities
  • Provide courier services and deliver official documents safely and promptly
  • Observe traffic rules and ensure passenger safety at all times
