KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maternity and Newborn Care

  • Provide complete nursing support across all phases of childbirth including prepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
  • Implement individualized care plans aligned with maternity protocols.
  • Educate patients and their families on treatment options, potential risks, recovery expectations, and lifestyle adaptations.
  • Safeguard patient privacy and uphold confidentiality standards.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with clinical teams and allied health professionals.

Clinical Monitoring and Emergency Response

  • Monitor patient conditions continually, including psychological and physiological responses to treatment.
  • Respond quickly to emergencies and participate actively in ward rounds.
  • Keep the emergency trolley ready and ensure supplies are replenished and functional at all times.
  • Participate in patient handover processes to ensure care continuity.

Protocols and Documentation

  • Adhere strictly to nursing and hospital protocols.
  • Document all patient interactions, vital signs, treatment administered, and clinical assessments in real time.
  • Submit incident reports for all sentinel events within 24 hours.
  • Ensure proper filing of legal and clinical documents, including checklists for procedures.

Medication and Treatment Administration

  • Administer medications accurately according to the “10 rights of medication administration.”
  • Maintain up-to-date drug registers and ensure secure storage of all pharmaceuticals.
  • Return unused medications immediately and confirm verbal prescriptions are signed within 24 hours.
  • Ensure correct and complete biodata, allergy details, and prescriptions are recorded.

Infection Control and Patient Safety

  • Comply with and enforce infection control standards as outlined in the hospital’s guidelines.
  • Observe International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs) including patient identification, medication safety, and fall prevention.
  • Apply infection control bundles (SSI, VAP, CAUTI, CLABSI) where applicable.

Financial Accountability

  • Ensure billing accuracy by adhering to preauthorization procedures.
  • Maintain an invoice rejection rate below 3 percent.
  • Support cost-efficiency through correct documentation of services and timely inventory checks.

Team Coordination and Supervision

  • Supervise Patient Attendants and ensure compliance with defined duties.
  • Communicate proactively with consultants, fellow nurses, and hospital management.
  • Enforce corporate governance policies, detect and report fraud, and comply with audit requirements.

Compliance and Standards

  • Maintain knowledge of all nursing and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Follow Government and Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) clinical practice standards.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and periodic policy reviews.

Additional Duties

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Maternity Unit Manager or Nursing Management in alignment with your job description and clinical scope.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Educational and Licensing Requirements

  • Diploma in Midwifery Nursing from a recognized institution
  • Valid Nursing License from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK)
  • Valid certification in: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), ETAT+, and EMOC

Experience

  • At least 3 years of work experience in a high-volume maternity ward

  • Knowledge of hospital safety goals and patient handling procedures
