Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive data protection program tailored to comply with the Data Protection Act, 2019, and other applicable regulations, ensuring all organizational practices align with legal standards.
- Conduct regular gap analyses to pinpoint weaknesses in current data protection measures and devise actionable strategies to address them effectively.
- Draft and enforce data protection policies and procedures that govern the collection, storage, access, sharing, retention, and secure disposal of sensitive information.
- Oversee the deployment of technical and organizational safeguards to protect data against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction, maintaining the highest security standards.
- Manage data subject access requests (DSARs) efficiently, ensuring responses are delivered within legally mandated timeframes to uphold transparency and accountability.
- Collaborate with internal teams, including IT, HR, and Legal, to promote awareness of data protection principles and embed best practices across all operations.
- Provide ongoing training and guidance to staff, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to fulfill their data protection responsibilities.
- Serve as the primary liaison for data protection inquiries, addressing concerns from internal stakeholders and external regulatory bodies with professionalism and expertise.
- Conduct Data Protection and Impact Assessments (DPIAs) to evaluate risks and maintain detailed records of all data processing activities for compliance purposes.
- Report regularly to senior management on data protection activities, compliance status, and emerging risks, offering clear insights to inform strategic decisions.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, Information Technology, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) certification or an equivalent qualification in data protection, demonstrating specialized expertise.
- Minimum of three years of hands-on experience in data protection, with a proven track record of managing privacy programs.
- Strong understanding of the Data Protection Act, 2019, alongside familiarity with other relevant data protection regulations, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) where applicable.
- Data security expertise, including knowledge of encryption techniques, access control mechanisms, and incident response protocols to mitigate breaches.
- Proficiency in IT systems, with an ability to comprehend data storage solutions, organizational data flows, and potential vulnerabilities.
- Analytical skills to identify data protection risks, assess their implications, and develop practical mitigation strategies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling clear articulation of complex data protection concepts to diverse audiences.
- A proactive mindset, staying informed about evolving data protection regulations and industry best practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Experience in data breach management, including the ability to identify, contain, and report incidents in line with legal requirements.
