INTRODUCTION

The Kenya School of Law (KSL) is a premier public legal education institution tasked with offering professional legal training, research, consultancy, and continuing legal education. Established under KSL Act Cap 16c, KSL is the sole provider of the Advocates Training Programme and a key player in expanding access to legal knowledge through paralegal and non-lawyer legal education.

To support the expansion of its Paralegal Training Programme, KSL is seeking to recruit dynamic, experienced, and academically outstanding individuals to serve as Adjunct Lecturers across 24 areas of specialization. These appointments are essential in equipping paralegals with the skills, knowledge, and ethical grounding to support justice sector institutions, NGOs, legal departments, and community-based legal initiatives.

AVAILABLE TEACHING SPECIALIZATIONS (COURSE UNITS)

Successful candidates will be engaged to deliver one or more of the following subjects:

1. Computer Application and ICT

Deliver training on productivity tools, digital file management, legal tech systems, and internet-based legal research methods.

2. Introduction to Law & Legal System

Familiarize learners with the sources, nature, and classification of law; structure of Kenyan and comparative legal systems.

3. Elements of Contract Law

Teach essential contract formation principles, performance, breach, remedies, and enforcement within Kenya’s legal framework.

4. Elements of Property Law

Cover real and personal property, land registration, ownership rights, leases, and customary land tenure.

5. Communication Skills

Support learners in developing legal writing, interviewing, negotiation, and formal communication techniques.

6. Elements of Commercial Law

Explore sale of goods, hire purchase, negotiable instruments, consumer protection, and basic commercial transactions.

7. General Principles of Constitutional Law

Explain the supremacy of the Constitution, separation of powers, bill of rights, and constitutional review processes.

8. Conveyancing

Provide instruction on land sale agreements, leases, mortgages, transfers, title search and due diligence.

9. Elements of Law of Business Associations

Introduce company formation, types of business entities, partnerships, corporate governance, and winding up.

10. Elements of Criminal Law

Deliver core concepts including mens rea, actus reus, classifications of offences, defenses, and sentencing principles.

11. Family Law

Cover marriage, divorce, custody, maintenance, succession, and legal rights of children.

12. Civil Procedure

Explain court structure, pleadings, pre-trial procedures, interlocutory applications, judgments, and enforcement.

13. Law of Succession

Teach testate and intestate succession, drafting wills, grant of probate, and distribution of estates.

14. Law of Torts

Introduce negligence, defamation, nuisance, vicarious liability, and remedies in tort.

15. Criminal Procedure

Cover arrest, charge, bail, plea taking, trial process, sentencing, and appeal mechanisms.

16. Fundamentals of Office Practice and Management

Teach filing systems, client management, legal recordkeeping, workflow control, and reception duties.

17. Fundamentals of Book-keeping and Accounting

Explain basic financial records, double entry, petty cash, income statements, and balance sheets for legal practice.

18. Introduction to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)

Train learners on mediation, arbitration, negotiation, and tribunal proceedings.

19. Introduction to Human Rights

Cover key rights frameworks, civil and political rights, human rights enforcement, and the role of paralegals.

20. Introduction to Environmental Law

Teach legal approaches to environmental protection, NEMA regulations, pollution, and sustainable development.

21. Ethics and Professionalism

Introduce legal ethics, confidentiality, conflict of interest, and code of conduct for paralegal professionals.

22. Employment Law

Explore employer-employee relations, contracts of employment, labor rights, redundancy, and workplace conflict resolution.

23. Records Management

Teach systems for document classification, archiving, digitization, access, and destruction of legal files.

24. Introduction to Legal Research and Writing

Focus on citation formats, statutory interpretation, legal drafting, case analysis, and research methodology.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

Applicants should:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Law, Social Sciences, or a relevant discipline related to their area of specialization
  • Hold at least 3 years of experience teaching or practicing in the chosen subject area
  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrate an ability to work with adult learners from diverse backgrounds
  • Be ICT-literate and able to deliver content through hybrid or blended platforms
  • Possess strong interpersonal and facilitation skills

Additional Requirements:

  • Professional registration or membership with a relevant body (e.g., LSK, ICPAK, ADR registries, HRM bodies) is an added advantage
  • Experience in curriculum development, competency-based training, or TVET certification is desirable for skills-based units

DUTIES AND DELIVERABLES

Adjunct Lecturers will:

  • Prepare lesson plans and learner-centered materials aligned to the KSL Paralegal curriculum
  • Deliver lectures, workshops, and assessments in-person or virtually
  • Evaluate students’ understanding through quizzes, tests, and assignments
  • Submit timely grades, class attendance records, and evaluation feedback
  • Attend briefings, moderation sessions, and subject review meetings as needed
  • Maintain professional conduct and uphold KSL’s institutional standards
