Key Responsibilities
As a Legal Counsel, your role will involve a variety of tasks critical to the organization’s operations, including:
Litigation Management
- Oversee litigation matters managed by external legal counsel.
- Draft and review pleadings prepared by external legal counsel.
- Develop and implement litigation strategies aligned with business needs.
Legal Agreements
- Review, optimize, and harmonize all legal agreements used across the organization.
- Create and maintain a library of legal templates for internal use.
- Scan and save transaction documents and key correspondence in the document management system.
Legal Advisory and Risk Management
- Advise on legal and risk issues impacting the organization’s operations.
- Monitor and interpret Kenyan legislation and inform stakeholders about its implications.
- Provide legal advice on complex matters spanning litigation, corporate law, and regulatory frameworks.
External Legal Counsel Management
- Coordinate external legal services and compile detailed reports on matters handled by external counsel.
- Rationalize the use of external legal advice to ensure cost-efficiency across all business units.
Policy Development
- Draft, review, and enhance internal guidelines and policies to ensure compliance and operational excellence.
Qualifications and Skills
To excel in this role, you will need the following:
Educational Background
- Bachelor’s degree in Law or a related field.
- Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate.
Experience
- A minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience, preferably handling complex litigation matters.
- Strong expertise in corporate and commercial law.
- Proven track record of working in emerging or frontier markets.
Core Skills
- Exceptional drafting and legal analysis skills.
- Strong technical ability in litigation and advisory roles.
- Proficiency in developing legal frameworks and strategies to mitigate risks.
