INTRODUCTION
Are you a dedicated and detail-oriented Theatre Technician passionate about surgical support services and patient care? Do you have experience working in high-pressure surgical environments and ensuring everything runs seamlessly before, during, and after surgical procedures?
Mater Misericordiae Hospital, one of East and Central Africa’s leading faith-based healthcare providers, is inviting qualified professionals to apply for the Theatre Technician position.
The successful candidate will be entrusted with ensuring the proper functioning, preparation, sterilization, and inventory of all surgical instruments, equipment, and operating room procedures. You will work closely with surgeons, nurses, and laboratory staff to support safe and efficient surgical operations that reflect Mater Hospital’s commitment to excellence, compassion, and Christ-centred care.

ROLE PURPOSE
The Theatre Technician will be responsible for:

Preparing and maintaining operating theatres and surgical instruments
-
Ensuring all equipment is in proper working condition before surgical procedures
-
Supporting the surgical team during operations by handling equipment, maintaining sterility, and anticipating surgical needs
-
Providing assistance with patient preparation, room cleaning, and equipment sterilization
-
Upholding safety, hygiene, and documentation standards as outlined in theatre operating procedures
This role is crucial in maintaining the operational readiness of the hospital’s theatres, supporting smooth surgical workflows, and ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and care.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Surgical Preparation and Support

Confirm that anaesthetic machines are tested, leakage-free, and fully functional before each procedure
-
Prepare surgical instruments, trays, and equipment in accordance with sterilization protocols
-
Assist in preparing the operating room prior to surgery, ensuring all tools, supplies, and devices are present, clean, and arranged properly
-
Prepare patients for surgery, including shaving or cleansing the surgical area, based on instructions from surgeons or nurses
-
Ensure surgical tools are sterile and maintained in the correct order for ease of use during procedures
Intra-Operative Assistance
-
Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, adjusting equipment, and ensuring a sterile environment
-
Cut sutures, operate or monitor breathing equipment, and assist in the management of surgical tools as directed
-
Respond quickly and efficiently to surgeons’ requests during operations, ensuring minimal disruptions
-
Maintain continuous observation of surgical activities to anticipate the needs of the operating team
Post-Surgical Duties
-
Clean and disinfect all surgical instruments, equipment, and surfaces after every procedure
-
Restock the operating room with necessary supplies and ensure proper disposal of used surgical waste
-
Safely collect and deliver surgical specimens to the laboratory in accordance with hospital protocols
-
Assist in moving patients into and out of the operating room and provide postoperative support as needed
Equipment and Inventory Management
-
Monitor and maintain cleanliness and functionality of all operating room equipment
-
Report defective or malfunctioning surgical tools and machines for immediate repair or replacement
-
Order, stock, and manage surgical supplies and instruments as per operating theatre demand
-
Maintain accurate records of surgical instruments, their usage, sterilization, and maintenance schedules
Compliance and Coordination
-
Work closely with nurses, doctors, laboratory technicians, and anaesthesia providers to ensure seamless coordination during procedures
-
Adhere strictly to infection control policies, sterilization standards, and hospital safety guidelines
-
Observe all hospital protocols and regulatory frameworks concerning surgical room operations
-
Maintain confidentiality and discretion in handling patient data and sensitive surgical procedures
Additional Responsibilities

Support routine and emergency surgeries across different theatre rooms as scheduled
-
Assist in emergencies outside normal working hours when called upon
-
Participate in continuous learning, theatre team briefings, and cross-functional collaboration for operational excellence

Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the theatre in-charge or hospital administration
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Academic Qualifications
-
Diploma in Theatre Technology from a recognized institution
Professional Experience
-
Minimum of 2 years working experience in an active theatre or surgical unit post-qualification
-
Anaesthetic Assistant experience is highly desirable, especially for candidates familiar with pre-op, intra-op, and post-op procedures
Technical Skills and Competencies
-
Proficient in sterilization techniques, handling surgical tools, and operating theatre equipment
-
Excellent understanding of infection prevention and control (IPC) standards
-
Good manual dexterity, physical stamina, and precision under pressure
-
Knowledge of equipment troubleshooting and minor maintenance
-
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex instructions accurately

Effective team coordination and communication skills within multidisciplinary teams
-
Willingness to work irregular hours and respond to emergency surgery calls
