INTRODUCTION
Are you a recent high school graduate looking to make a real difference in your community? Do you have the passion to support others and help fellow youth build stronger mental health foundations? If yes, the Shamiri Fellow Program is your opportunity to become a certified peer leader delivering life-changing mental health interventions in your own county.
The role of a Shamiri Fellow is unlike any other entry-level opportunity in Kenya. You will be trained and supervised to deliver a proven, group-based mental health program in local high schools—all without needing formal medical or psychological experience. This is your chance to join a mission-driven community that is transforming youth wellness across the country.
This call for applications is for individuals who have never worked as Shamiri Fellows in any phase or partnership of the Shamiri Program. If selected, you will be part of a select cohort receiving intensive training, real-world experience, and compensation for every session you lead.
ABOUT SHAMIRI INSTITUTE
Shamiri Institute is a trailblazing, youth-led mental health organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. Since its founding in 2018 by Tom Osborn and Katherine Venturo-Conerly, the institute has reached over 40,000 young people across the country with effective, low-cost mental health interventions.
Shamiri means “to thrive” in Kiswahili—and thriving is what the Institute empowers young people to do. Through school-based group interventions, Shamiri is addressing depression, anxiety, social isolation, and academic disengagement by focusing on strengths, values, and social support.
The Shamiri Institute’s flagship intervention—delivered by Fellows just like you—has led to:
-
40% improvement in mental health outcomes
-
14% improvement in social relationships
-
3% increase in academic performance
By embedding wellness into schools and communities, Shamiri is shaping the future of mental health in Africa. The Shamiri Fellow role is at the heart of this mission.
