We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Officer Data Protection to join our Governance, Audit & Risk Management team. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about data privacy, compliance, and digital innovation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As the Senior Officer Data Protection, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring M-Pesa Africa’s compliance with data protection and privacy laws, while embedding a culture of data governance and privacy by design. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Compliance Monitoring and Advisory:

Review and provide expert advice on data governance frameworks, data processing activities, and incident management related to data breaches.
Monitor adherence to national and international data protection regulations across all operational markets.
Advise on the development and implementation of policies and guidelines to maintain regulatory compliance.
Conduct regular compliance reviews and share best practices with relevant teams.

2. Privacy by Design Implementation:

Integrate privacy by design principles within M-Pesa Africa’s SAFE Agile product development framework.
Offer guidance to product teams, ensuring that compliance and data protection measures are embedded from inception through implementation.

3. Risk Management:

Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) to proactively identify and mitigate potential privacy risks.
Maintain comprehensive records of all data processing activities undertaken by M-Pesa Africa.
Provide oversight and recommendations on data management procedures to ensure alignment with privacy requirements.

4. Awareness and Training:

Organize and coordinate data protection and compliance awareness programs across the organization.
Conduct training sessions for staff, stakeholders, and Compliance Champions to foster a strong data protection culture.
Collaborate with the Group Privacy Team to participate in regional training initiatives.

5. Reporting and Assurance:

Develop and deliver quarterly reports on M-Pesa Africa’s privacy program, highlighting compliance status and risk management outcomes.
Implement monitoring and assurance activities to assess the effectiveness of data protection controls.
Coordinate feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement of data governance practices.

6. Stakeholder Engagement:

Act as the central point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on matters related to data protection.
Support the coordination of Compliance Champions to ensure a controls and compliance culture across all levels of the organization.
Engage stakeholders to drive behavioral change and promote compliance as an integral part of business operations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

To excel in the role of Senior Officer Data Protection, candidates should meet the following requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Information Security, Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
Proven experience in data protection, privacy compliance, or regulatory governance.
Strong knowledge of applicable data protection laws and regulations, including GDPR and local data privacy legislation.
Familiarity with compliance programs, control management frameworks, and audit processes.
Experience conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and compliance reviews.
Ability to analyze complex data flows and recommend actionable privacy controls.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills.
Demonstrated ability to train and influence cross-functional teams.
Strong organizational and reporting skills with attention to detail.
Experience working within Agile frameworks is an added advantage.
