The Regional Director role at C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group offers an extraordinary opportunity to shape the global climate agenda by supporting and elevating city-level action across Africa. As part of a dynamic, cross-functional international NGO, the Regional Director is entrusted with aligning C40’s programs, initiatives, and stakeholder relationships across key African cities.
This role is designed for a seasoned leader with deep experience in urban governance, environmental sustainability, international development, and team management. If you are passionate about city diplomacy, climate resilience, and strategic delivery across multiple stakeholders, this role places you at the core of regional transformation aligned to the global climate agenda.

Created and led by cities, the organization connects visionary city leaders and provides them with tools, frameworks, and support systems to combat climate change and promote urban sustainability. Now in its 11th year, C40 continues to influence climate-related urban policy at both global and regional levels.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead C40’s presence in Africa by managing relationships with all member cities in the region.
- Act as the senior representative for the C40 network in Africa, aligning city strategies with global climate goals.
- Strengthen collaboration and political engagement with regional mayors, city governments, and municipal leaders.
- Coordinate the C40 Regional Business Plan in Africa, ensuring cross-functional team alignment and strategic implementation.
- Oversee the design and rollout of regional technical assistance programs and ensure alignment with local government priorities.
- Supervise city advisors and support staff across the region, cultivating a culture of performance and accountability.
- Promote peer-to-peer learning, regional collaboration, and the sharing of best practices within the African region and across the global network.
- Provide strategic input and operational support to the C40 Vice Chairs and Co-Chairs based in the region.
- Represent C40 at regional climate summits, mayoral forums, and urban sustainability conferences.
- Maintain compliance with C40’s operational code of conduct, including ethical governance and fiscal responsibility.
- Support regional fundraising efforts and cultivate partnerships with key stakeholders, donors, and city networks.
- Drive inclusion of climate ambitious non-C40 cities into global initiatives where appropriate.
- Liaise with global C40 teams, ensuring cohesion, transparency, and impact-driven engagement.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in environmental science, public administration, climate policy, sustainable development, or a related discipline.
Required Experience
- Over 10 years’ experience at senior levels within government, NGOs, multilateral organizations, or international consultancies.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience managing cross-country, multi-site operations in Africa.
- Proven background working directly with municipal governments, senior officials, and mayors.
- Demonstrated experience in environmental policy, climate programs, or city-level sustainability projects.
- Proven experience in developing intergovernmental strategies, multistakeholder negotiations, and cross-sector alignment.
Skills and Attributes
- Outstanding leadership and strategic planning skills.
- Excellent communication, public speaking, and diplomatic skills.
- Deep understanding of climate finance, fundraising, and donor engagement.
- Familiarity with regional urban dynamics, governance structures, and development challenges.
- Fluency in English is mandatory; working knowledge of French is a distinct advantage.
- Nationality of an African country and experience working across Africa is required.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively across the region and globally.
