KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Recovery Officer will play a crucial role in managing loan collections and minimizing the risk of financial loss. Specific responsibilities include:

1. Debt Collection and Recovery

  • Proactively engage defaulters through calls, SMS, field visits, and official correspondence
  • Negotiate payment arrangements, settlements, or restructuring with defaulting clients
  • Achieve daily, weekly, and monthly recovery targets across assigned portfolios
  • Conduct skip tracing and tracking of customers with non-updated contact or residence details

2. Portfolio Monitoring and Risk Mitigation

  • Collaborate with Credit Officers, Branch Managers, and Business Development Officers to recover delinquent accounts
  • Monitor performance of accounts in arrears and generate reports with recommended actions
  • Prepare daily recovery action plans based on delinquency aging reports
  • Escalate unresolved or high-risk cases to management with detailed field findings

3. Reporting and Analytics

  • Prepare recovery reports, dashboard summaries, and tracking logs for senior management
  • Document repayment agreements and update client account statuses on CRM or loan systems
  • Provide management with timely insights into repayment behavior and risk exposure

4. Compliance and Regulatory Adherence

  • Ensure all recovery activities follow the institution’s credit policy, customer rights protection, and data confidentiality protocols
  • Adhere to CBK and industry regulatory standards concerning collections and financial customer service
  • Identify deceased, disabled, or legally non-collectible accounts and recommend closure or review

5. Customer Service and Relationship Management

  • Maintain professional and empathetic communication with clients during collections
  • Address customer concerns or complaints promptly and ensure effective resolution
  • Promote goodwill by demonstrating fairness and consistency in handling defaulters

6. Field Operations and Investigation

  • Conduct field visits to customer premises, collateral sites, or co-guarantors as needed
  • Validate client information, verify income sources, and assess repayment capacity on-site
  • Submit field visit reports, photographic evidence, and next-action recommendations

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

To qualify for this role, candidates must possess the following minimum requirements and competencies:

Academic Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Banking, Mathematics, or Credit Management

Professional Certifications (Preferred but Not Mandatory):

  • Certified Credit Professional (CCP-K)
  • Short courses in credit risk analysis, debt collection, or SME finance

Experience:

  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in loan recoveries or credit collections in a financial institution, SACCO, fintech company, or microfinance organization

Key Competencies:

  • Deep knowledge of credit recovery processes and risk assessment methodologies
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and CRM/account tracking software
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills
  • High attention to detail and report writing ability
  • Ability to work independently in field-based roles and across multiple regions
