The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is recruiting 66 experienced and qualified Qualitative Field Interviewers to support a nationwide research study titled “Foundational Learning in Kenya.” This project aims to examine teaching practices in foundational literacy and numeracy, including how and why educators make specific pedagogical decisions.

This opportunity is open to field professionals based in Garissa, Kisumu, Makueni, Marsabit, Murang’a, Nairobi, Narok, Taita Taveta, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, and Vihiga. If you have a background in education, strong interviewing skills, and experience in data collection, this is your chance to contribute meaningfully to evidence-based educational reform in Kenya.

ABOUT THE AFRICAN POPULATION AND HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER (APHRC)

APHRC is a globally recognized African-led research organization headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. The Center is dedicated to generating rigorous scientific evidence that informs policy and improves lives across Africa. APHRC operates at the intersection of research, capacity strengthening, and policy engagement, with a firm commitment to advancing equity and improving the well-being of African communities.

Through its work, APHRC influences national and regional policy on education, health, urbanization, and development. The Center’s flagship studies have informed decisions by governments, international NGOs, and UN agencies. The Foundational Learning in Kenya study is one of APHRC’s most strategic educational research initiatives, designed to generate critical insights into early-grade pedagogy across diverse counties.

ABOUT THE PROJECT – “FOUNDATIONAL LEARNING IN KENYA”

The Foundational Learning in Kenya study seeks to understand:

  • What pedagogical approaches are commonly used in teaching foundational skills

  • How teachers change and adapt their instructional behavior over time

  • The reasoning behind specific pedagogical decisions in different school environments

The study emphasizes qualitative methodologies, including in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and contextual analysis. Field Interviewers will collect data directly from teachers, school leaders, and classroom environments to help APHRC uncover how foundational learning is currently practiced and how it can be improved.
