We are currently seeking a qualified and experienced Nutritionist to join our dynamic medical team. The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing patient outcomes by integrating individualized medical nutrition therapy into clinical care. This role will be based in Nairobi and is suited for a professional with both clinical expertise and a patient-first approach to wellness.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Nutritionist at Mater Hospital, you will collaborate with medical teams to develop and implement patient-centered nutrition interventions, support chronic disease management, and promote preventive health measures. Key responsibilities include:
1. Clinical Nutrition Assessment & Planning
- Participate actively in ward rounds, contributing to the development of nutrition care plans for inpatients
- Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments based on patients’ medical history, dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory data
- Develop and implement personalized nutrition therapy in alignment with specific diagnoses, including chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, renal disease, and gastrointestinal disorders
2. Patient Education & Lifestyle Counseling
- Provide individualized dietary education to patients and caregivers on healthy eating habits, nutrient timing, and portion control
- Counsel patients on lifestyle modifications to support treatment outcomes and long-term wellness
- Support patients with meal planning strategies that respect cultural preferences, allergies, and socioeconomic constraints
3. Collaborative Care & Interdisciplinary Coordination
- Work in close collaboration with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals to ensure holistic, coordinated care
- Integrate nutrition goals into multidisciplinary care plans for both inpatient and outpatient services
- Provide nutritional input during discharge planning to ensure continuity of care post-hospitalization
4. Special Diet & Meal Planning Oversight
- Prescribe and monitor special therapeutic diets (e.g., low sodium, renal, high protein, ketogenic, or low-residue diets)
- Liaise with the hospital kitchen and catering services to ensure accurate meal delivery based on dietary orders
- Ensure all meal plans meet clinical nutrition standards, food safety, and institutional policies
5. Patient Monitoring, Evaluation & Documentation
- Track patient progress and clinical outcomes using standard nutrition indicators
- Adjust diet plans based on clinical improvements or setbacks, lab results, or emerging complications
- Maintain meticulous records of nutrition assessments, interventions, patient education, and clinical outcomes
- Uphold patient confidentiality and adhere to institutional data protection standards
6. Nutrition Promotion & Wellness Programs
- Participate in or lead hospital-wide wellness programs, including:
Weight management clinics
Nutrition and wellness workshops
Preventive screenings and public health campaigns
- Offer staff nutrition education, especially for high-risk professionals and support staff
- Provide evidence-based updates on current nutrition research and trends
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
Academic & Professional Credentials
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and/or Dietetics from a recognized institution
- Valid license from the Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI)
Clinical Experience
- A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working in a hospital, clinical, or acute care environment
- Familiarity with Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) principles across diverse conditions
- Experience designing and supervising therapeutic diets in collaboration with clinical teams
Technical & Soft Skills
- Strong understanding of nutritional biochemistry, dietary assessment tools, and evidence-based nutrition guidelines
- Excellent interpersonal and patient counseling skills
- Strong documentation and reporting skills with proficiency in using electronic medical records (EMRs)
- Empathetic, detail-oriented, and able to manage time efficiently in a busy healthcare setting
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
