INTRODUCTION
The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is a premier state corporation mandated to collect, preserve, study, document, and present Kenya’s cultural and natural heritage. Established under the Museums and Heritage Act No. 6 of 2006, NMK operates as a multidisciplinary institution committed to enhancing public knowledge, appreciation, and sustainable use of national heritage resources.
In line with its vision of safeguarding Kenya’s past and present for the benefit of current and future generations, NMK is seeking to recruit qualified, experienced, and visionary professionals to fill the following key positions across various departments. These roles offer a unique opportunity to work in one of Kenya’s most respected heritage institutions and contribute to national development.
VACANCY 1: PRINCIPAL LAND SURVEYOR | JOB GRADE NMK 4
Role Overview:
The Principal Land Surveyor will be responsible for leading land and quantity survey functions across NMK’s diverse sites and infrastructure. This includes supervising survey projects, managing staff, and implementing institutional strategies related to land tenure, cadastral records, and heritage property development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead land survey activities including boundary definition, cadastral, adjudication, sub-division, and engineering surveys
- Formulate, review, and implement land survey and management policies and strategic plans
- Coordinate the preparation of maps, plans, and charts including photo control surveys
- Standardize and certify survey equipment and ensure adherence to technical benchmarks
- Oversee the planning and budgeting process for the land survey unit
- Manage departmental performance and conduct capacity-building for technical staff
Person Specifications:
- Master’s degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial Engineering, Urban Planning or equivalent
- Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Survey Technology, or equivalent
- Valid professional membership and practicing license
- At least 10 years of relevant experience, including 4 years in a supervisory capacity
- Proficiency in survey equipment, GIS systems, and computer applications
- Leadership, strategic planning, and analytical skills
- Meet the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution
VACANCY 2: ASSISTANT LAND SURVEYOR | JOB GRADE NMK 7
Role Overview:
The Assistant Land Surveyor will support the implementation of NMK’s survey activities. The position involves conducting land, boundary, and development-related surveys and assisting in quantity survey functions for construction, conservation, and planning projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in conducting general land, boundary, and cadastral surveys
- Implement provisions of Survey Act, Land Act, and relevant statutes
- Collect and analyze site data for subdivision schemes and property demarcation
- Support the preparation of Bills of Quantities and project estimates for NMK developments
- Participate in inspection and maintenance of mapped sites
Person Specifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Geospatial Engineering, GIS, or related field
- Valid practicing license and professional membership (where applicable)
- Computer literacy in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and mapping software
- Demonstrated skills in reporting, problem-solving, and teamwork
- Fulfill the provisions of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution
VACANCY 3: PRINCIPAL ESTATE MANAGEMENT OFFICER | JOB GRADE NMK 4
Role Overview:
This position leads the estate management function, ensuring optimal use, maintenance, and development of NMK’s property assets. The role involves overseeing property records, lease management, tenant relations, and development plans aligned with NMK’s conservation objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement estate management policies and strategic plans
- Supervise lease administration, rent reviews, and property occupancy
- Maintain accurate registers of land, buildings, and tenant information
- Lead building inspections, maintenance scheduling, and asset development
- Coordinate board of surveys and facilitate registration of new facilities
- Prepare reports on estate performance and oversee budgetary planning
Person Specifications:
- Master’s degree in Valuation, Estate Management, Construction Management, Facilities Management or related fields
- Bachelor’s degree in Land Economics, Architecture, Urban Planning, Engineering, or equivalent
- Valid professional membership in a recognized estate or property body
- Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience, 4 of which must be at supervisory level
- Strong planning, leadership, and negotiation abilities
- Fulfill the provisions of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution
VACANCY 4: LEGAL OFFICER | JOB GRADE NMK 6
Role Overview:
The Legal Officer will handle institutional legal affairs including contract management, compliance, litigation, and intellectual property (IP) protection. This position ensures NMK’s adherence to legal frameworks governing heritage, employment, property, and public service operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft and vet contracts, leases, and service agreements
- Manage NMK’s litigation matters and liaise with external legal counsel
- Conduct legal research and prepare advisory briefs
- Monitor legal risks, policy changes, and statutory compliance
- Support board secretarial duties as required
- Coordinate IP protection, registration, and awareness campaigns
Person Specifications:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized institution
- Postgraduate Diploma in Law (KSL) and admission to the Bar
- Valid practicing certificate
- Minimum 4 years of post-admission experience
- Strong drafting, litigation, and compliance knowledge
- Meet requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution
VACANCY 5: ASSISTANT LEGAL OFFICER | JOB GRADE NMK 7
Role Overview:
The Assistant Legal Officer will support the delivery of legal services across NMK, including contract drafting, litigation support, and IP management. The role is ideal for recently admitted advocates with foundational legal practice skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in reviewing and drafting legal documents
- Monitor litigation timelines and case files
- Research legal precedents and compliance frameworks
- Participate in board secretarial functions
- Support implementation of IP education, registration, and dispute resolution
Person Specifications:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and Postgraduate Diploma from Kenya School of Law
- Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
- Valid practicing certificate
- Proficiency in legal research, document management, and reporting
- Demonstrate strong ethics, team spirit, and attention to detail
- Fulfill Chapter Six (6) requirements of the Constitution
