INTRODUCTION
The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) is a State Corporation established under the Kenya Maritime Authority Act, 2006, tasked with regulating, coordinating, and overseeing maritime affairs within Kenyan waters. It implements and enforces provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2009 and aligns operations with relevant international maritime conventions.
KMA invites applications from dynamic, results-driven, and visionary professionals for key leadership and technical positions in the maritime sector. POSITION SUMMARIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
1. Director – Maritime Education, Training and Labour
This position ensures that Kenya’s maritime education institutions adhere to global training standards, while supporting sustainable labour development in the maritime sector.
Key Duties:
-
Develop and enforce accreditation frameworks for maritime colleges
-
Ensure compliance with STCW and IMO requirements
-
Manage training curriculum standardization
-
Guide seafarer certification and licensing processes
-
Lead policy formulation on maritime employment and labour rights
Minimum Requirements:
-
Master’s degree in Maritime Education, Training, Human Resource, or related field
-
10 years of experience, 5 in senior leadership in maritime affairs
-
Deep understanding of seafarer welfare, crew certification, and labour treaties
2. Director – Maritime Trade and Development
The Director will oversee policy development, research, and implementation frameworks to expand Kenya’s maritime trade capacity and competitiveness.
Key Duties:
-
Formulate trade facilitation policies for port logistics and shipping corridors
-
Promote investment and private-sector partnerships in maritime infrastructure
-
Represent KMA in regional maritime trade forums
-
Advise government on Blue Economy expansion
Minimum Requirements:
-
Master’s degree in Maritime Policy, International Trade, Economics, or Logistics
-
10 years of professional experience, with 5 in strategic leadership
-
Experience in maritime economic development, port systems, or freight logistics
3. Assistant Director – Training and Certification (Engineering)
Responsible for technical audit and regulation of training institutions offering marine engineering qualifications.
Key Duties:

Inspect and assess marine engineering schools and programs
-
Guide and supervise national examinations and competency standards
-
Update certification frameworks to meet IMO benchmarks
-
Provide expert advice on technical training curricula
Minimum Requirements:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture
-
Professional certification as per IMO regulations
-
6 years of experience in maritime education or regulation
4. Assistant Director – Research, Strategy & Planning
The officer will support long-term planning, sector research, and cross-border coordination of Kenya’s maritime development strategy.
Key Duties:

Draft and update strategic and operational plans

Coordinate performance management reporting
-
Lead institutional data collection and analysis
-
Track implementation of development initiatives and programs
Minimum Requirements:
-
Master’s degree in Public Policy, Strategy, or Maritime Development
-
6+ years in research or planning in public or maritime sector institutions
-
Strong data analytics and stakeholder coordination skills
5. Principal Administration Officer
A mid-level administrative position tasked with optimizing internal operations and compliance with HR, procurement, and office procedures.
Key Duties:

Manage day-to-day office administration
-
Supervise administrative staff and coordinate support services
-
Monitor asset records, facility logistics, and contractor services
-
Ensure policy adherence in leave, attendance, and service delivery
Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Admin, or HR

5 years in a public or regulatory institution

Familiarity with public procurement and human resource policies
