An exciting opportunity has opened up for a seasoned Mechanical Engineer to join a high-performing technical team based in Marsabit, Northern Kenya. ABOUT THE EMPLOYER
The employer is a reputable development-focused organization operating in Marsabit County, Northern Kenya. You will be part of a multidisciplinary facilities team committed to maintaining operational excellence across mission-critical buildings, systems, and utility infrastructure. Your role will touch the lives of both local staff and community beneficiaries by ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient engineering services.
ROLE PURPOSE
The Mechanical Engineer will oversee the day-to-day operations, installation, inspection, and maintenance of all mechanical systems across the facility. You will also coordinate projects involving electrical repairs, water supply networks, drainage and waste disposal systems, and preventive maintenance planning.
Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the successful candidate will ensure the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions that are both cost-effective and compliant with safety, environmental, and Kenyan regulatory standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Mechanical and Plumbing Engineering
- Plan, design, and supervise the installation and maintenance of mechanical systems including HVAC, water pumping, plumbing, and ventilation
- Oversee repair, servicing, and replacement of water heating systems, toilets, waste disposal systems, and water supply networks
- Ensure compliance with national and international plumbing and sanitation standards
- Conduct pressure testing, leak detection, and flow assessments across all water distribution points
B. Electrical Systems Oversight
- Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot medium and low-voltage electrical systems
- Supervise generator usage, backup power systems, and solar installations
- Maintain lighting systems, circuit breakers, power outlets, and electrical appliances across buildings
- Identify and rectify safety risks in live electrical systems and maintain proper records of inspections
C. Facility Maintenance and Asset Management
- Implement preventive and corrective maintenance schedules across all infrastructure systems
- Supervise contracted works for roofing, carpentry, building finishes, and civil maintenance tasks
- Prepare material requisitions, BOQs, and maintenance logs for procurement and reporting
- Liaise with procurement and stores teams to maintain adequate inventory of spare parts and essential materials
D. Project Planning and Supervision
- Provide technical input in new project designs including cost estimates, material selection, and feasibility analysis
- Coordinate the execution of renovation, expansion, or facility upgrade projects
- Ensure proper handover, documentation, and testing of all engineering works before use
- Supervise junior technicians, contractors, and third-party service providers
E. Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Enforce health and safety protocols for all maintenance tasks
- Monitor fire safety systems, emergency response infrastructure, and compliance with building codes
- Maintain risk registers and incident reports relating to maintenance and operations
F. Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare weekly and monthly maintenance reports for the Facilities Manager
- Maintain accurate drawings, system schematics, user manuals, and vendor service records
- Conduct regular audits and site inspections for performance and quality assurance
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Professional certification or licensing (e.g., EBK or IEK registration) preferred
- Minimum of six (6) years of proven experience in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineering with direct responsibility for preventive maintenance and system installation
Desired Competencies
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, water systems, and waste infrastructure
- Electrical troubleshooting and wiring skills (medium- and low-voltage systems)
- Familiarity with solar and backup power integration
- Excellent computer skills including MS Office, AutoCAD, and CMMS software
- Ability to work in harsh environmental conditions and manage multiple technical teams
- Strong interpersonal skills, time management, and ability to work independently
JOB LOCATION: MARSABIT, KENYA
This is a full-time, on-site position based in Marsabit, a remote but strategic location in Northern Kenya. Candidates must be willing to relocate or be already based in Marsabit or neighboring counties (Isiolo, Samburu, Wajir).
Applicants should be prepared for periodic travel to nearby project sites and facilities for inspections, installations, and maintenance coordination.
