INTRODUCTION
Are you passionate about harnessing the power of African capital to drive climate and nature-based solutions? WWF is seeking a Lead Consultant to spearhead greening finance initiatives across East Africa. This consultancy offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with leading financial institutions, shape sustainable investment strategies, and build a long-term program to drive climate-positive finance solutions. If you have a strong track record in finance, renewable energy, and investment sectors, this role is for you.

In East Africa, WWF collaborates with key stakeholders to integrate sustainability into financial practices, enhance investment in green projects, and support climate adaptation strategies. Our mission is to align financial flows with climate goals, ensuring that economic growth contributes to environmental preservation and community resilience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Renewable Energy Credit Portfolios: Design and lead the development of renewable energy credit programs for financial institutions, focusing on microfinance and commercial banks.
- SME Investment Readiness: Develop and implement strategies to improve SME access to green finance and investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
- Financial Sector Engagement: Strengthen relationships with banks, investors, and regional financial institutions to advance climate risk management, sustainable infrastructure investments, and blue economy projects.
- Program Expansion: Contribute to the design and development of WWF’s post-2025 green finance programs, ensuring long-term impact and scalability.
- Capacity Building: Provide technical assistance, training, and strategic advisory services to financial institutions to enhance their green finance capabilities.
- Policy Advocacy: Work with policymakers, regulatory bodies, and financial sector players to influence policies that drive sustainable finance adoption.
- Collaboration: Engage with WWF offices in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Madagascar, as well as the WWF International Finance Practice and WWF Norway, to align strategies and maximize regional impact.
- Reporting & Analysis: Track progress, analyze key performance indicators, and provide recommendations for optimizing green finance programs.
- Travel Requirements: Travel within East Africa to liaise with financial institutions and stakeholders (as per WWF travel policies and pre-approvals).
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Finance & Investment Expertise: Extensive experience in the banking, microfinance, and investment sector, with a strong background in green finance.
- Renewable Energy Financing: Proven track record in designing and implementing financial mechanisms for renewable energy investments.
- Training & Capacity Building: Experience in delivering large-scale technical training and advisory services for financial institutions and businesses.
- Strategic Leadership: Ability to conceptualize, develop, and execute sustainable finance programs at scale.
- Entrepreneurial Mindset: A self-driven, innovative leader with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Strong ability to build partnerships with financial institutions, investors, government agencies, and sustainability leaders.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to assess financial trends, risks, and opportunities within the green finance ecosystem.
- Project Management: Proven ability to manage multi-stakeholder projects with measurable impact.
- Excellent Communication: Strong writing, presentation, and negotiation skills.
- Regional Knowledge: Deep understanding of East Africa’s financial landscape, climate risk frameworks, and sustainability regulations.
CONSULTANCY TERMS
- Engagement Period: April 1 – December 31, 2025 (Up to 20 days per month)
- Contracting Entity: WWF Uganda
- Location: Consultant must be based in East Africa (Kenya preferred, Uganda and Tanzania considered)
- Compensation: Monthly payments in arrears based on approved timesheets and deliverables
- Travel Requirements: Regional travel within East Africa (pre-approved and reimbursed per WWF travel policies)
