The Royal Norwegian Embassy invites applications for the position of Driver / Chauffeur on a full-time, three-month contract with the possibility of extension.

This role requires a highly professional individual with a clean driving record, knowledge of Nairobi’s traffic network, defensive driving techniques, and the ability to maintain confidentiality in diplomatic settings. If you are a proactive and responsible driver with excellent interpersonal skills, this is a unique opportunity to contribute to a respected international mission and work in a globally engaged, multicultural environment.

ABOUT THE ROYAL NORWEGIAN EMBASSY

The Royal Norwegian Embassy, previously based in Khartoum, is currently located in Nairobi and temporarily represents Norway’s diplomatic interests in Sudan. The Embassy engages in multiple strategic areas including support for political processes, humanitarian response coordination, and development cooperation.

As an integral part of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy adheres to strict international standards of professionalism, safety, and diplomacy. The working environment is defined by mutual respect, cross-cultural engagement, high-level confidentiality, and dedication to global cooperation. Embassy operations are conducted in alignment with Norway’s foreign policy goals and commitments to peacebuilding, human rights, and sustainable development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The selected Driver / Chauffeur will work closely with Embassy officials and administrative staff to ensure safe, timely, and efficient transportation services. Key responsibilities include:

  • Safely driving Embassy staff and official guests to meetings, events, airports, and various official locations within Nairobi and, where necessary, surrounding areas.

  • Transporting official documents and diplomatic parcels, ensuring secure and discreet handling of sensitive materials.

  • Maintaining the assigned Embassy vehicle in a clean, fully functional, and roadworthy condition, including routine inspections, fueling, cleaning, and reporting any issues promptly.

  • Observing all traffic laws and safety protocols, including adherence to security procedures and diplomatic transport policies.

  • Mapping and navigating efficient routes, with a strong understanding of Nairobi’s roads, traffic patterns, and alternate routes to avoid delays.

  • Assisting with administrative and logistical support tasks, such as mail delivery, banking errands, minor procurement runs, and guest assistance during official functions.

  • Maintaining a daily vehicle logbook, including mileage records, destination details, maintenance schedules, and fuel usage.

  • Acting as an ambassador of the Embassy through professional, courteous, and confidential conduct at all times.

  • Providing basic first aid assistance if required, and responding appropriately in case of emergencies on the road.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

To be considered for this role, candidates must demonstrate a blend of driving competence, embassy or organizational experience, and strong personal responsibility. The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • Proven experience as a professional driver, preferably within an Embassy, United Nations agency, or international NGO environment.

  • Valid Kenyan driver’s license with a clean driving record—zero history of traffic offenses or safety violations.

  • Valid work and residence permit in Kenya (this is a mandatory requirement and not negotiable).

  • Knowledge of Kenyan traffic laws, road regulations, defensive driving techniques, and safe transportation protocols for diplomatic entities.

  • First aid certification or demonstrable knowledge of basic first aid procedures.

  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili, both written and spoken.

  • Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional professional driving or mechanical certifications are considered an advantage.

  • Excellent route planning skills, orientation to destinations within Nairobi, and understanding of key security-sensitive zones.

  • Experience with VIP transportation, diplomatic protocol, and handling of confidential assignments is strongly preferred.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

The role requires a candidate who can remain calm under pressure and deliver high-quality service under minimal supervision. Key attributes include:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to relay important information clearly and diplomatically.

  • Self-motivation and independence, with an ability to remain proactive and attentive without needing constant supervision.

  • Flexibility in work schedule, including availability during weekends, early mornings, and evenings when required.

  • Professionalism and discretion, with absolute respect for the privacy of passengers, documents, and diplomatic procedures.

  • Cultural sensitivity and team spirit, with the ability to work within a diverse, multinational environment and collaborate respectfully with all Embassy personnel.

  • Commitment to safety and responsibility, demonstrating reliability, punctuality, and ethical conduct.

  • Initial contract duration is three (3) months, with potential extension based on performance and operational requirements.

  • Remuneration package includes a competitive salary, regulatory pension contributions, and insurance coverage.
