Key Responsibilities

  • Nursery Management for Agroforestry Projects: Oversee the establishment and management of nurseries dedicated to agroforestry projects. Ensure the production of high-quality seedlings suitable for local environments.
  • Conduct On-Farm Participatory Research: Lead participatory research initiatives, engaging farmers and communities in identifying effective agronomic practices and innovations.
  • Implement Agroforestry and Agronomy Best Practices: Guide the adoption of sustainable agroforestry and agronomic techniques to improve soil fertility, increase crop yields, and enhance environmental resilience.
  • Training and Capacity Building: Design and conduct training programs for community members and field workers, focusing on sustainable agriculture, nursery management, and agroforestry practices.
  • Work with Community Forest Associations (CFAs): Collaborate with CFAs to implement agricultural projects aligned with afforestation and conservation goals.
  • Facilitate Community Engagement: Engage local communities, ensuring inclusive participation and fostering ownership of agricultural projects.
  • Promote Youth and Women Empowerment: Advocate for the active involvement of youth and women in agronomic and agroforestry activities, promoting economic opportunities and gender inclusivity.
  • Document Project Activities: Maintain accurate records of nursery operations, training sessions, research findings, and community engagements. Provide regular reports to Akili Group management.
  • Liaise with Stakeholders: Coordinate with government agencies, development organizations, and private sector partners to support project implementation and resource mobilization.
  • Utilize Technology and Tools: Apply MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for project documentation, reporting, and data analysis.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Educational Background: Undergraduate degree in Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or closely related sciences.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluent in English, Kiswahili, and Luo to effectively communicate with diverse communities and stakeholders.
  • Professional Experience:
    • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working as an agronomist or in a related agricultural field.
    • Proven experience in managing nurseries for agroforestry projects.
    • Minimum of two (2) years’ practical experience working with Community Forest Associations (CFAs).
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct or facilitate on-farm participatory research.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • In-depth understanding of agroforestry systems, agronomic practices, and sustainable agriculture techniques.
    • Familiarity with environmental conservation principles and natural resource management frameworks.
  • Community Engagement Skills:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with community members, CFAs, and stakeholders.
    • Experience in youth and women empowerment initiatives, promoting inclusivity and equity.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for preparing reports, training materials, and presentations.
  • Additional Attributes:
    • Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently.
    • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
