Introduction
Save the Children is seeking a dynamic and experienced Communications and Media Manager to lead the execution of its communication strategy in Kenya and Madagascar. This role is pivotal in engaging stakeholders, inspiring support, and driving impactful change for children. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of communication, advocacy, and media, crafting messages that resonate with diverse audiences while upholding the integrity of Save the Children’s mission.
The Communications and Media Manager will play a central role in strengthening the organization’s brand, developing high-quality communication materials, and fostering media partnerships to amplify child-centered initiatives. Key Responsibilities
1. External Communications
- Develop and Socialize Strategy: Review and refine the country office communication strategy and guidelines, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and donor requirements.
- Media Material Production: Collaborate with program teams to design and produce impactful media materials that highlight Save the Children’s initiatives.
- Situational Reports: Lead the development and dissemination of real-time humanitarian and developmental reports for various stakeholders.
- Brand Visibility: Drive initiatives to enhance Save the Children’s brand visibility, ensuring it is recognized, respected, and protected at all levels.
- Content Development: Work with project leads to identify and document compelling stories, case studies, and success stories that communicate the impact of Save the Children’s work.
- Content Quality Assurance: Review and present stories, photos, messaging, and multimedia products to align with global standards and organizational values.
- Training and Capacity Building: Train senior staff in communication strategies and media engagement to strengthen their roles as spokespersons.
- Campaign Support: Partner with the Advocacy and Campaigns team to localize and implement global campaigns, contributing stories, videos, and photos to highlight achievements.
2. Media Engagement
- Media Strategy: Review and execute the media engagement strategy, building relationships with key media outlets to promote Save the Children’s work and child rights issues.
- Press Opportunities: Proactively seek press opportunities to showcase interventions and advocate for children’s rights.
- Social Media: Develop and implement a robust social media strategy, ensuring platforms are regularly updated to communicate the organization’s impact effectively.
- Media Messaging: Identify key media issues, draft messages, and ensure their dissemination aligns with Save the Children’s guidelines.
- Content Creation: Draft media briefings, talking points, press releases, and Q&A documents to support advocacy priorities.
3. Internal Communication
- Reporting: Compile and develop reports, newsletters, and sit reps to communicate key organizational updates internally.
- Promotional Materials: Create and refine creative promotional materials, such as leaflets, brochures, and infographics.
- Communication Calendar: Develop and maintain a communications calendar capturing the priorities and planned activities of the country office.
- Content Management: Oversee the management of internal communication platforms, including content archiving and uploading.
4. Documentation and Reporting
- Impact Measurement: Develop systems to monitor and evaluate the impact of communication and media initiatives, sharing achievements with senior management.
- Success Stories: Regularly share success stories and learning experiences with regional and global stakeholders.
- Research and Learning: Collaborate with the Head of MEAL to review and package research findings into compelling formats for internal and external audiences.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, International Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
- Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of cumulative experience in communication and media roles.
- At least 5 years of managerial experience in a similar capacity.
- Skills:
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Advanced proficiency in graphic design, photography, and videography (preferred).
- Strong understanding of media relations and audience engagement strategies.
- Proven ability to adapt content to diverse audiences, including donor agencies and the general public.
- Proficiency in social media management and content creation.
- Excellent command of English and Kiswahili; knowledge of French is an advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines.
- Commitment: Willingness to travel extensively within Kenya and Madagascar.
